Description

PHO Grand Rounds: Assessing and mapping the environmental health of 2,074 communities across Canada: The contextual factors study of the Canadian Alliance for Healthy Hearts and Minds

Cardiovascular risk varies across communities in Canada. A person’s physical and social environment likely influences the development of chronic disease risk factors. The environment may affect health behaviours through physical (e.g. community resources, built environment) or social (e.g. social support, norms) dimensions, which influence diet, physical activity, smoking, and other health-related behaviours. These behaviours may directly or indirectly increase the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

As part of the Canadian Alliance for Healthy Hearts and Minds study (a pan-Canadian, prospective, multi-ethnic cohort study), we audited 2,074 urban and rural communities between 2014 and 2016, using a standardized instrument to collect objective measures of demographic, public transport, tobacco, grocery, alcohol, and healthy restaurant options available. We created an online map of these communities for public and planning use. This presentation provides an overview of the findings, highlighting differences between provinces, urban and rural, and northern and southern communities.

Presenter: Russell de Souza

Russell de Souza is a Registered Dietitian and Assistant Professor at McMaster University and an Associate Investigator at the Population Health Research Institute in Hamilton, Ontario. He is interested in understanding how food choices and the built environment contribute to the development of chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular disease. He has investigated this in randomized trials, cohort studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
